Between 2015 and 2017, Africa went through one of its most intense electoral cycles, with 52 elections, including 25 presidential races. To fight electoral fraud and manipulation, FIDH united dozens of African and international civil society organisations under the "My Vote Must Count" coalition. FIDH asked us to expose the reality of elections under authoritarian regimes. Our insight was simple: in some countries, casting a ballot is no different from feeding it into a paper shredder. This idea became Democracy Confetti. Shredded ballots were turned into confetti—a powerful symbol of stolen democracy—featured in print and distributed by human rights activists. The campaign quickly became a symbol of resistance, covered by African TV and newspapers.
